My Educational Philosophy

"Oh! I get it now!"....

Those are my absolute favorite words to hear from a student. I have done everything from practicing lessons in front of friends and family, to seeking the advice of students who have mastered a concept. These strategies have lent themselves to helping my students understand and apply tough concepts.

I have also come to learn that there is no better lesson than a hands-on experience. We have learned about the plant life cycle by taking seasonal nature walks. We have turned animal behavior research into animated videos. We have taught lessons to our own classmates to show mastery and build our own self-esteem. It works and best of all, it is fun!

Classroom Management

Upon entering my classroom on the first day of school, my students are invited to develop rules for the class that will help them to learn and stay safe. These rules are agreed upon and posted, along with clear consequences and rewards.

Providing Motivation

Every person has a reason and a collection of experiences behind their actions. This is no different for children. My teaching practice includes providing one-on-one time for each of my students through conferencing. Though it is sometimes difficult, conferencing allows the student time to express what interests them, which I later use as a motivational tool. Short term goals are also set and revisited during this time.

In all, I have dedicated the past 9 years of my life to teaching and learning. My current goals are centered around guiding students to attempt and facilitate high level tasks using technology and hands on learning. It is my hope, as well, to instill confidence and social skills through academic mastery.
